what is Heat zones?

  • As we move away from the equator towards the poles, the climate changes from hot to warm, warm to cool and cool to cold in both hemispheres. This is because the rays of the sun become increasingly slanting and therefore heating becomes less. On the basis of the distance from the equator, the earth is divided into the following heat/temperature zones:
  • Torrid Zone: 'torrid means hot. The torrid Zones lies between the Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) and Tropic of capricorn (23½°S). Since the direct rays of the sun fall throughout the year in this zone, it is the hottest zone.
  • Temperate Zones: 'Temperate' means moderate. The North Temperate Zone lies between the Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) and the Arctic Circle (66½°N) and the South Temperate Zone lies between the Tropic of Capricorn  (23½°N) and the Antarctic Circle (66½°S). These areas experience moderate temperatures as they receive slanting rays of the sun.
  • Frigid Zones: 'frigid' means cold. The North Frigid Zone lies between the Arctic Circle  (66½°N) and the North pole and the South Frigid Zone lies between the Antarctic Circle (66½°S) and South pole. Here the sun's rays are very slanting and, therefore, there is very little heating in these zones.

      what is rotation? The spinning movement of the earth on its axis from west to east which causes day and night is called rotation. One rotation of the earth on its axis takes about 24 hours or one day. The axis is an imaginary line joining the two poles through the centre of the earth. it is inclined from the vertical at an angle of 23½°, which means it is inclined at an angle of 66½° to the plane of the earth's orbit --- the level path on which the earth revolves around the sun. The side of the earth facing the sun has day while the other side, facing away from the sun, has night. The circel that separates day and night is called the circle of illumination.
